In the spring of 2007 I accepted a one year position as a visiting Professor of Art at Hastings College in Nebraska.
This work was conceived as a means to document, through photography, my response to living in a new location. This physically foreign environment reinforced a contrast of scale — human to nature.
Initially, my idea was to repeatedly document a specific location. I thought that returning to the same location each day would grant me a fuller idea of a place. Driving to the initial “place” I decided to expand the area of interest.
The result was over 1500 photographic images of the region around Hastings, Nebraska made over 10 months – from August 2007 to May 2008.
This body of work attempts to document my vision of the fundamental elements of this place –
